TN and passport both need renewal

I am a Canadian citizen working on TN visa in US. My TN visa and passport will expire close to each other soon.

Do I need a passport with six months validity to renewal my TN visa?
What is the fastest way to renewal my passport? I heard it took about four months by mail, which is too long for me.
 
If you are applying by mail (I-129), then you can apply up to 6 months in advance - that way you can use your valid passport as a proof of your Canadian citizenship. But if you apply in-person at the border (land/airport), you can apply only a few (couple?) weeks in advance in which case you most likely cannot use your expired passport.
 
Just to clarify, the TN will be granted at the border for the full term, HOWEVER, the I-94 will only be issued until passport expiry ate, requiring a return to the border after passport is renewed.

When applying n=by mail (I-129) the passport need only be current, and the I-94 will be issues with full term validity.
