I am about to file my N400 and I have a question regarding tax returns. I had filed for an extension for my 2017 tax returns and will be filing the actual tax returns by the end of this month. I have never defaulted on any of my tax returns.
On the N-400 form what should I answer for "Have you EVER not filed a Federal, State or local tax return since you became a lawful permanent resident?"

Since I did not file my tax returns in April, is it considered as "not filing" tax returns even though I filed for an extension?

Please advice.

Filing an extension for tax return legally moves the deadline for filing taxes from 15th of april.
So you can legally say that you have always filed your taxes.

Tax extensions are granted for six months ,you are well over that .

Tax extensions doesnt mean you can simply file in whatever year you feel like.

There is still a cut off point.

You would need to answer yes to have failed to file taxes and include an expalaination.

Tax returns are to be filed by April 2018. Its only August 2018. Extension is until Oct 2018. How am I well over 6 months?

Tax returns for 2017 =year of 2016

Tax returns for 2018 = year of 2017

Misread your post . Youre fine... That was my fault..
