Good morning,

I represent a 501(c)(3) faith-based nonprofit organization. We are preparing to petition for an R-1 visa on behalf of a foreign national who will serve in a religious capacity within our organization.

This will be our first time filing an R-1 petition, and we are seeking guidance on how best to structure and present the role — particularly regarding the job title, responsibilities, and compensation — to meet USCIS expectations.

Proposed Job Title: Missionary / Discipler / Worship Artist

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide spiritual mentorship to women in our faith community
  • Disciple and invest in new believers to help them grow in their faith
  • Chart worship music for use in evangelistic and community outreach events
  • Prepare the music/AV elements for outreach events and services
  • Assist in exploring new ministry opportunities, particularly within the Navajo Nation (AZ & NM)
  • Help organize religious events, retreats, and mission trips
Compensation Structure:
  • Room and board provided by the organization
  • Domestic travel costs covered
  • Weekly stipend of $100
  • Commitment of 35 hours per week

We would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone with experience submitting or reviewing R-1 petitions. Specifically, we’re interested in:
  1. Whether the proposed title and duties align well with USCIS standards for “religious occupation”
  2. Whether the compensation model (room, board, stipend) is likely to satisfy USCIS requirements for verifiable support
  3. Any additional documentation or structuring tips that could strengthen the petition

Thank you in advance for your insights and experience.
