Puerto Rico

Hi,
I am a permanent resident and I'm studying Spanish.
My Green Card expires next August(2009).
If I were to spend an extended period of time in Puerto Rico, would it be classed as maintaining my presence in the US? I know it's a US territory, but it's a gray area to me.
Also, could I apply to renew my Green Card whilst in Puerto Rico?
Thanks very much,
Pete

I would ask USCIS.Is there any USCIS office there.

Yes, time in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands counts as time within the US. You can live and work there as long as you want with your green card.

Not sure about renewing the green card though. They'd have to have an office there where you could give the fingerprints. But if they don't, I figure you can do it by flying back to the mainland.

Time spent in PR even counts towards naturalization both for physical presence purposes and for continuous residence purposes
