Passport Renewal for under 16 Child

Hi All,
I need to renew my son's US passport. Hopefully you guys can shed some light on the following questions:

- Is there a reason we should consider renewing the same prior to it's expiry? He is also a Canadian passport holder (living in Canada) and can visit US on Canadian passport anytime.
- He will be turning 15 this year. If we apply for his passport renewal, would the new one be valid for only for 1 year (until he turns 16). I presume folks are considered adults after 16 years of age.

Technically as a USC he has to use a US passport to enter the US.
If you renew before 16 it will be valid for 5 years, same as any other child passport. Doesn’t matter how old he will turn during the duration.
