I have an adult child, green carded since 2000 when a minor, now married to an american citizen offspring of senior military officer. Is bipolar 1 and had several involuntary confinements to mental institution between ages of 17 and 21. However the last was well over 5 years ago (cant remember the date) and has been well and stable non episodic compliant on medication for many years. Since 2010 has worked as a mental health counsellor/case manager first at a state physchiatric hospital and since 2014 for the local community services board. Is a licensed in Virginia Qualified Mental Health Professional. We consulted an immigration lawyer about the citizenship process, who admitted that he had no experience with this particular issue but he advised that would need to go back to the hospital with the last commitment and get proof that we was discharged as sane (ironic as its the hospital where he subsequently worked). Given his professional status in the local mental health community this process could be embarrassing and traumatic. It seems to me that a clear statement of the chronology, plus providing proof of stability from his doctor, plus references from employers should be sufficient, but of course need to do the correct thing.

Advice would be appreciated.

Second issue whilst in that period of instability, he had two misdemeanors - both drunk in public. First was on 21st (now 29) birthday when he was left behind in a bar by "friends" after he fell asleep police were called and he was booked. Second a couple of months afterwards he and friends were booked for trespassing when they entered a closed parking lot to retrieve sweater from car that couldnt be driven out. reduced at court to another "drunk in public". Any issues with these as long as clearly explained - either due to misdemeanor or "habitual drunkard" - no subsequent issues in fact doesnt drink due to medications.

Question 1
Select yes when asked if ever confined to a mental institution . If any further information. Is needed at the time of interview IO will let him know Highly doubt it though

FYI he will be judged by IO at said time so unless he appears " problematic". He'll be fine

Question 2. Select yes to question have u ever been arrested
List arrest in application

Get a hold of the the Disposition for each case. As he will need them at the time of the interview

His steady employment for the last 8 years is a good. Look for him.

Save your money and don't use a lawyer.

Ps I'm no lawyer but have experience in a similar situation

But if using a lawyer gives you peace of mind go for it!
