O visa eligibility

Hi all
I have been here for 9 months on J1 research visa. Can I apply for O visa rather than J1 extension. even though I can extend it upto 3 years?

You can always apply, but it should not be right after you came to
the US. They can refuse it on the base that you have had dual intent,
e.g. immigration, when accepted J-visa.

Being on J-visa also have some advantages, e.g. your income
is not taxable (at least by federal law) under the tax treaty.
