I am currently on a J1 visa and recently finished my residency in surgery which lasted for six years. I now plan to do a 2 year fellowship in the same field. Since my J visa will not permit me to be in the program beyond one year, I plan to change my status to O visa before starting the fellowship. My question is whether my wife, who is on a J-dependent visa and is doing her residency training in anesthesia, will be able to work on a O-dependent visa.

No. O-visa dependents can\'t work, but she can apply for H-1 if you don\'t
have the 2 year home residence reqirement.

Your wife can also apply for O1 visa as this visa is almost common and there are not any rejections in any case.
