Hi everyone,
About 10 years ago, I was granted asylum here in the U.S., and now I’m hoping to apply for asylum for my younger brother. He’s about 40 years old, but he’s mentally disabled. He can’t talk, and mentally he’s like a 1 or 2 years old child. You can tell just by looking at him that he’s not well.
He’s such a gentle and calm person, but he needs constant care and protection. Right now, he’s in the U.S. on a B1/B2 visa, but we’re originally from a very dangerous and unstable country in the Middle East, a place full of corruption, violence, and no mercy for people with disabilities.
If he ever had to go back there, I honestly fear for his life. There’s no healthcare, no education, no jobs, no support, nothing at all for people like him. He would be completely helpless. People there often mistreat or even harm those who are mentally disabled. Some might take advantage of him, some might throw stones at him in the street, and others might even tortured him or kill him just because they believe he’s a spy and they don’t understand his condition. I know deep down that if he went back alone, he wouldn’t survive.
I’m reaching out for any advice, guidance, or personal experiences you might have. Do you think he would have a chance if he applied for asylum and had his interview at the Chicago asylum office?
Thank you all for taking the time to read this, it truly means a lot.
