Is this possible? Can the international student office do this to me?!

The International Student Office did not issue me a CPT because of their negligence, and now they are terminating my SEVIS in a week. I was doing an UNPAID INTERNSHIP REQUIRED AS PART OF MY DEGREE (Masters)!!

A lot of schools do not even REQUIRE a CPT for unpaid internships. Does that mean that US Federal laws apply differently to different schools?!

There are a lot of other schools where CPT is only recommended. In all cases, I am shocked that students can be terminated and restricted from any further studies here for something like this. Had I gone to a different school, this would be a non-issue, but since I am at UMKC, I will be deported? That seems extremely odd and unsettling to me as a student!!

What do you guys think? I contacted SEVP Call Center with a complaint and they said they are researching the situation. My advisor who planned to terminate it is new on the job. She started on February 4th, 2013. Does she know what she is doing?

She is probably going the "safe" route in her new job by not looking too deeply for a solution for your particular case. You need to understand though, it was your responsibility to make sure that your CPT application was complete (including your advisor's letter) and that they gave you the CPT I-20 before you did anything. You can talk to other people in the school, Dean's office is a good idea, or find somebody more senior at the international office. You can also tell her to ask for advice of her fellow DSOs at the other campuses. Of course whether she'll tell your part of the story is to be seen. Asking your lawyer to file a complaint with SEVP could be useful if there is such a thing. You need to understand that there should be a legal way for her to fix this, otherwise she can't do anything. That yours was an unpaid CPT is in your favor but all CPTs have to be authorized regardless of pay.
