Is stamping required?

Sorry for my ignorance, but is stamping a required process or just something to get by with while waiting for the real thing? I hear that it only takes 8-10 weeks to get the green card, so why go for stamping if it isn't necessary?

Stamping is required, because during stamping your fingerprint and signature are taken on form I-89, and the biometric information is used to process your actual plastic card.

Also, if you're one of the lucky ones who didn't get an RFE, or an interview at the local office, this is their only opportunity to verify that you actually exist, and that you haven't abandoned your adjustment of status application by leaving the country permanently, or if you haven't died during the long arduous wait. :D
