Interview process - what happens during the appointment

I always though that the interview is the day for which you need to prep for a citizenship exam (much like driving license test), and the USCIS would be mailing a booklet for us to prepare from.

On the contrary from the immigration letter, it seems to be rather a full-blown verification process and they have sent a generic checklist of documents to bring, and no mention of any tests ...

could someone shed some light please?

It's both; a small exam as well as verifying the information you provided in your N400 application.

You should have received a booklet at your fingerprint appointment that covers the exam part, no?
They will ask you up to 10 questions from the list of 100 questions covering US history, civics, rights & resposibilities, etc. You need to get 6 of the 10 correct.
They will ask you to read a short sentence in English, as well as write another short sentence.
They will go over your entire N400 application and verify the information, this is your chance to correct anything that has changed in the months since you sent in the application.
Depending on how you filled out the N400 application, you may be asked to provided additional evidence. For example, any extended trips or criminal record.
Marriage-based citizenship applications have additional requirements for documentation, like tax transcripts.

Search this forum for "interview experience" and you will find lots of stories of people who have already gone thru the interview.

+1 to what rjackal wrote.

The interview consists of both the tests and going over your application.
