I-94 and Canada immigration

When one crosses border to Canada by road, no stamping is done on the passport and I-94 is left attached to the passport, expecting a return. What happens if one stayed in Canada (legal permanent immigration) long enough that his I-94 expires ? Wouldn't it look like the person is still inside US illegally ? I guess this would be a problem if later that person wants to visit US as a legal Canadian resident.

My friend is in this situation, he married a Canadian citizen, applied for Canada immigration and while he still had valid H1 moved to Canada. Now he is expecting his Canadian immigration to come through anytime but his I-94 has already expired but it is still with him.

Does someone knows what he needs to do to set INS records straight ?

Thanks in advance.

Surrendering the I94 while crossing the US-Canada border

Check the backside of the I94

It says that one should surrender the I94 card to the Canadian official whiel crossing the US-Canada border.
