H4 to J1 conversion

Hi
Currently I am holding H4 visa and I have received an opportunity to do post doctoral work in university in USA and they are ready to sponsor me J1 visa. So is it possible to convert H4 to J1 visa status and if it is possible, I wish to know how and how much time it takes to convert to J1 visa if I am staying in USA and how much time it takes for visa stamping if i go to my home country and get it done there.
 
Yes you can change from H to J1 status, if you are not currently out of status and have a DS2019. If you want to file without departing the U.S., you can do it via form I-539 (read here - http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-539instr.pdf).
If you want to depart the U.S. and obtain a visa, you can do it as well. Obtaining a visa may be faster but is slightly riskier if you run into administrative processing.
