H4 to H1, what happens if Change of status is denied

I am on H4, and I plan to apply for Change of Status to H1.

Say, my Change of Status is denied and tells me to go back to my home country and get it stamped.
a. Do I have to leave the country asap?
and my H4 status becomes invalid?
b. Or can I maintain my H4 status and stay back.
