From OPT to H1

I am working on my OPT and waiting for my H1 to come but my OPT will expise in August and the H1 will not start till October. Can I work that is can I be on the payroll during the interim period that is begining August till October?

with the new H1B quota available for the year 2005 quota you can apply for a amendment to change your start date from oct to aug
