Do they check your tax returns?

Hello all,

So I'm getting ready to apply for citizenship and I see they want to know if you filed taxes every year since you became a resident.

Is this just a checkbox "yes he filed his taxes, tick!" or do they go through it? Because my 2016 return looks a little hmm..

I guess my question is, how thoroughly do they examine your tax returns?

Thanks!

They don’t always check them but they checked mine. However they are not auditors, they don’t check what is in them, just that you filed them and you don't have any tax owing. For that you just need a copy of the tax transcripts for each year (can download from the IRS website).
