Do I need to renew H1 and EAD both

Hi,

My and my Wife's I485 RD is 11/1/01. My H1, my wife's H-4 and our EAD's expire on 1/1/03. I have applied for our EAD renewal 2 weeks ago. We didn't cancel the H1/H4 so I guess I am still working on H1 visa vs EAD.

My question is

Do we need to renew our H1/H4 visas as well?

Please advise.
 
It's always better to have the EAD on the side, just in case of lay offs.

Yes, if you're working on your H1 you should get it renewed. If you plan to work on your EAD you might want to file a new I-9 with your employer.
 
whos is paying for it?

You dont need to renew ur H1. It costs more $$$ than the EAD renewal. You can get the same ok almost the same benefits from the EAD. I dont know if you can change from one company to another on a H1 while your 485 is in progress. So I dont see the point in renewing a H1.
