There is a new law that went into effect July 31st 2002 that allows people in EB1, EB2, EB3 categories file I-485 (AOS) same time as they file their I-140.
Previously you had to wait for I-140 to be approved before filing I-485.
All the benefits of filing I-485 are available, that is filing I-485 for your dependents and they in turn being able to file for EAD/AP so they can work (if they are not able to work already). However, from what I have read it is unknown how the AC21 portability rules will apply. Still, IMO this is a great and hopefully will shorten the overall process time.
Let your friends know about this new law if they are about to file or even if they have already filed I-140 and are awaiting its approval.
