can a U.S. citizen live in Canada?

I'm a U.S. citizen and my girlfriend is Canadian. I would like to move to Surrey, B.C. to live with her and cross the border to work in the U.S. Is this possible without getting married? Marriage may be in our future. We want to live together first for a couple of years. What kind of hoops do I have to jump through to make this happen? Thanks

Not interested in working in Canada at this time, maybe down the road. How about just living there and commuting to Bellingham to work? Do I need a visa or anything to do that?

Thanks that site was very helpful. It looks like since i'm a U.S. citizen I won't need a visa. From what I understand tell the border guard where I will be residing and they will send me a permanent residency card. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
What about my personal property will I have to pay duties or taxes or anything on my property?
