Do I or my spouse need to submit a birth certificate when filing for I-485 under the Asylum category.

Yes. If you dont have one..get written affadavits(notarized) from your family members who know when/where you were born. Thats what i submitted.
 
Why can't you get affadavits? Those are written statements by someone who knows you and then signed..they dont have to be U.S Citizens.

I filed as a derivative asylee in 2001. I didn’t have my BC at that time so I just photocopied every page of my passport and sent along with my I-485.
My application is still pending and I already done my fingerprints.
I have my birth certificate here now, along with the notarized translation, ready to submit to INS, if they ever ask.
