From 1997 to last week Chinese men could stand in the shoes of their wives and obtained asylum if the wives were forced to have abortions or sterilization even if the wives were still in China. Tens of thousands of Chinese guys obtained asylum in this way. The Attorney General himself has now stepped in to end this practice (it is rare for the AG to intervene in asylum cases).
This move did not surprise me at all. It had been under consideration for a long time. These people, once they got their green cards, could not wait to visit China or renew their Chinese passports. Do not blame the U.S government for being cynical toward them. More restrictive policies with respect to them are in the pipe line.
