Question
When I first applied for a Social Security card, I was issued a
card that says, "Not Valid for Employment" and I now have permission
to work from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Will I be
issued a different number, or will I have to apply to adjust my
current number?
Answer
If the Immigration and Naturalization Service has granted you
permission to work, you need to apply for a replacement card without
the legend “Not Valid For Employment? Your replacement card will
have the same number as your current card.
To apply for a replacement card, you need to complete Form SS-5 which
is available for download at at
http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html.
Or you may obtain Form SS-5 by calling 1-800-772-11213 or visiting
your local Social Security office.
You will need to submit Form SS-5 with evidence of your identity and
current authorization to work from the Immigration and
Naturalization Service. Your immigration document may be acceptable
as evidence of both your identity and authorization to work in the
United States.
All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the
issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies of documents. We need
original documents or copies certified by the custodian of the
record. Notarized copies are also not acceptable.
We suggest that you take your application and immigration documents
to your nearest Social Security office rather than mail them. You
can find that office at:
