A trip to Mexico with just a stamp

Am I allowed to visit Mexico or Canada with just a stamp in my passport or I will have to acquire a visa from their embassies to enter these countries?
It would be nice to hear about someone's real experience instead of just guesses. My lawyer said that "You would need to check with the Mexican and Canadian governments to see if you need visas for your particular trips".
 
I was talking to my friend this morning, He has 551 stamped on his passport and went to switzerland last week. Switzerland allows Green card holders to get into the county like maxico and Canada.

But they denied to get him through with 551 only. They said, you need Plastic cards to get in to the country or go upstairs and get the visa.
