181-day rule per calendar year or after last departure ?

Hello,
I “activated” my green card in Philadelphia on September 9, 2024 and stayed until October 5 (I still have a lot of things to do here in Germany before my final moving). I was in the USA again for 4 days in November 2024 (renewed biometric appointment). The final move is currently planned for the beginning of March 2025, but it looks like it will take me a little longer, probably until the end of April 2025.
Well, there is a rule that green card holders have to stay in the USA for at least 181 days a year. But what period does that refer to? I activated my green card on September 9, 2024, but until September 9, 2025 I would not have been 181 days a year and I could get into trouble. However, if the counting always starts at the turn of the year, the 181-day rule would not be violated. Can anyone tell me which period this refers to?

You seem to be getting your rules a little confused (not uncommon). There is a max 180 day absence rule so that you don’t break continuous residence for naturalization purposes. But a green card holder can stay out up to a year without automatically being deemed to have abandoned permanent resident status. (With nuances, see “Does travel outside the United States affect my permanent resident status?” here : https://www.uscis.gov/green-card/af.../international-travel-as-a-permanent-resident ) There is no rule that says that your green card is in danger if you have not been in the US for half of any specific 12 month period.

All periods are counted from the date of your last exit. So if you exited Nov 2024, any period (whether the 180 days if you are looking ahead to naturalization requirements or one year if for purposes of maintaining your green card) are counted from that date.
