It depends
Did you use EAD ? Meaning did you fill out I-9 anywhere using this EAD ? If the answer is Yes then you cannot use H1 now. Theoritically you cannot work after your EAD expires unless you receive renewal. Since status violations (unauthorised employment ) after filing I-485 does not...
Yes you can
but If you don\'t work for sponsoring employer after getting EAD, INS may view it as not having intention to work for sponsoring employer after 485 approval.
If you work for sponsoring employer and also want to do some consulting, I see no issue.
If the check has been cashed
get a copy from the bank, it will have your receipt number. If not, there is a great possibility that your petition has been lost or shredded. You should take immediate action, talk to INS.

After receiving AP/EAD, it is not required that you change your status to anything (like H4...why?) in order to get I-485 approval. After filing I-485 you are not statusless, you have a valid status called "adjustee".
What confuses you in this case ? Why is the situation...
Local INS may issue AP
You will need to show documentry proof of your emergency. Take AP and I-485 receipt copies with you. (also keep Money order/checkbook with you)
No you don\'t need AP if you have valid H1/H4 visa (+stamp)
Its your choice, you can either use AP or H1/H4 visa for entry, both work. Keep a copy of I-485 receipt with you while entering.
180 days rule ceases to exist after approval
Leaving immediately after approval -> not good (serious repercussions, employer might get the GC cancelled or GC can be revoked by INS during citizenship process)
Staying with employer for sometime (6 month is safe) -> good
My understanding is that
I-485 is considered abandanded when a person leaves US without getting AP (exceptions : H and L ). Therefore, her I-485 is dead already.
fdbl : I will never suggest to anyone
Lawyers in these big law firm are just employees, they don\'t care much. Try small law firm which has only one or two lawyers.
Lawyers of big law firms are hard to reach, you always have to talk to paralegals...
Disability insurance has nothing to do with Govt.
Its not a "public charge". Employer\'s buy these insurance policies from private insurance companies.
