thanks nkm
...for a really fast reply.
Its good to know this, because I never worked in India. (I am F1->H1)
Just for reference, can you tell me how you found this out?
I will be going to India this weekend. I already have a valid H1 stamp from my trip last year... so this question is not about H1 stamping.
I read in newspapers a few months ago that Indians visiting India might need IT clearance certificate... Is this true? I'll be in India for 20 days only...
...to get the extension process done? also, can the visa be revalidated in the US or must one return to the home country (India in my case)? Can I continue working if the extension app is put in, and current H1 has expired?
how long does it take...

surprising
i am quite surprised to read this stuff.
when i went to mumbai for stamping last year (in may end), the process was a breeze. drop box and passport was delivered home in 2 days. i don't know what was the rejection/acceptance ratio because i simply had to drop in my app and leave...
thanks for the reply Raj.
I was more interested in knowing if I can start this process AFTER a possible layoff. What are the implications then?
If it is possible, then within how many days after a layoff should one file for an H1->F1 transfer?

Can you tell me what all the necessary documents are?
I will also follow up with my International students department.
Also, if I were to get laid off, then I would need to remain in the country until the next semester starts. Is this allowed...

I am currently on an H1 and intend to remain in that status as long as I have my job.
I am going to start an MS program in a univ towards the end of this month part time (3 units only).
Besides the purpose of doing further studies while working, I also wanted to be able to...
I did it on May 21 this year. H1 Stamping in Mumbai is very easy unless things have changed in the past 3 months.
Just follow the instructions on the website www.visaservices.com. It is quite simple. Not too many docs are reqd:
Passport, I-797, I-129 H-supplement, letter of continuing...
...at the south mumbai center was a smooth process.
Documents:
Passport, I-129 H supplement, I-797 original
Letter that I am currently employed
Letter that I am on leave
DS156, DS157,
demand draft and photo
That\'s all. In fact, they wouldn\'t take my education credentials, paystub...

Please let me know your response to my question (msg #8) above when you get the chance.
As you can imagine, I\'m a bit anxious after your reply. I hadn\'t taken that mistake very seriously until I read one post mentioning that the company letter of support should be...
