    Social Security

Actually, that is what it says on my card already (except with INS instead of DHS). Got mine back in 1997 when I was in the U.S. on a J-1 visa. I wrongly assumed that snowflake's card said the same and that he/she did not quote the text on the card. Surprised to learn that it would say "not...

    Social Security

You should not get a new SSN. The "not valid for employment" on the SS card just means that you cannot use the card to get employment. You will need additional documentation (such as an EAD card). Getting the EAD card does not change that, so I do not see why you would need to contact the...

    Question about new W4 forms??

By the way, be careful if you and your spouse have roughly the same salary. The exemption calculation works best if one makes significantly more than the other. The person who makes less should claim zero (0) exemptions (or possibly 1) to be on the safe side. I think the W-4 instructions...

    Question about new W4 forms??

It is nonresident for tax purposes, which has little to do with immigrant status (IRS has its own definitions). I was resident for tax purposes for part of the time I was on a J-1 non-immigrant visa. If you are married to a USC or if you have stayed in the U.S. for more than five years, then...

    EAD Timeline: Updated

Definitely go ahead and ask. The worst thing that could happen is that they say no.

    EAD Timeline: Updated

I am afraid that is a bit too optimistic. Few get their EAD in less than 60 days, even without an RFE, so you are most likely looking at end of July at the earliest. Sorry. :(

    Got interview letter

Congrats Juno! I have my interview on the same day. :)

EAD Timeline After RFE - continued

You got an iEAD? They will not take it away. The 90 days after receipt is obviously not strictly enforced (see Patty's case). Just keep the iEAD. You are not doing anything wrong. The online confirmation you got is the standard one and the only one you will get. Several people here have...

    AOS Interview Timeline

Forget about it. The application fees are non-refundable. I think it says so clearly either on the form or on the USCIS Web site.

EAD Timeline After RFE - continued

Congrats someitguy! I know the feeling. :D Hope you get the AP too. I definitely thought you would have gotten that long before the EAD.

EAD Timeline After RFE - continued

How do we get credit? Now we have EAD. Now we are here what should we do???

Credit card companies will ask for your social security number when you apply for a card. I think you will have a hard time getting credit without a social security number, since they use it to check your credit history. If your question is whether the A# is enough, then the answer is most...

How do we get credit? Now we have EAD. Now we are here what should we do???

Have you lived in Pennsylvania? Have you had an account with Duquesnes Light, Equitable Gas, or Verizon? As I said before, just because you have not had any utility accounts show up on your credit reports it does not mean that utility accounts cannot be factored into credit scores. Capice...

How do we get credit? Now we have EAD. Now we are here what should we do???

No, you are wrong. All my cedit reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion (no I do not have access to any "super secret credit reports") include my past and present accounts with Duquesnes Light (electricity). My wife's reports from Equifax and Experian (I do not have her...

How do we get credit? Now we have EAD. Now we are here what should we do???

Little Britain, I am not sure it will help you that much to have so many cards. In the short term, it will hurt your credit score if you open a lot of cedit accounts in a short period of time. If you can get one card, that should be enough to build a credit history. Usually you will know...

How do we get credit? Now we have EAD. Now we are here what should we do???

Not true. Gas and Electric show up on my credit reports. Paying utility bills on time will help your credit score. Factors that impact your credit score include: * average age of accounts (opening new accounts can have a negative impact because it lowers the average age; utility accounts...
