I too am interested in the answer to this question. I had my FP on 1/4/2012, yellow letter received on 2/6/2012 and status is still "initial review". DO is San Francisco.

Most likely, the phone number you are referring to is for FP status, not name check. AFAIK, the only way to check name check status is to use infopass, go to your local office and ask a USCIS officer in person, or to inquire through congressman/senator.
