    Advice on tax return stuff

I already said I know that I'm a resident, that isn't what I'm asking. I'm asking if I have to mention my prior income for that year on my American tax return for that year. i.e. I worked in Canada from February to July, and became a US tax resident in October. Do I have to mention that I worked...

    Advice on tax return stuff

I'm only a resident alien, because I have a green card but don't meet the substantial presence test. I'm still unsure if I need to report my working in Canada to the IRS or not.

    Advice on tax return stuff

I saw that, and there is one paragraph which seems to simply things: So, that's fine, I'm a resident since August. But what do I do for the previous part of the year where I was working in Canada...just ignore it? If I file taxes in Canada does that affect my US tax return?

    Advice on tax return stuff

Hi guys, I'm the winner of the DV lottery, and immigrated to the US last year in August. After getting my temporary green card I stayed for a week, then went back to Australia for a month. I've been living in the US since October. I'm having some trouble figuring out if I have to file a...

It doesn't work that way, even if you had a green card.

    Filing my first tax return

Hi all, I immigrated to the US in August of last year, although I only stayed in the country for a week, before going back to Australia for a month. I then have been in the US since the beginning of October. I've never filed a tax return before, but I understand as a green card holder I...

    Do not wait for SNN

I would say if you are moving to NYC, then get the card automatically. I had mine in 2 weeks from the date I officially immigrated. It may be because there are special SSA offices for the boroughs in NYC.

    2013 DV Australian winners

Just wanted to counter that I find NYC cheaper than Australia in general. I am subletting a room so don't have to worry about credit history or the like, and it entirely depends on your field with how easy it is to find work. I work in IT, and have had a lot of offers already (moved there in...

Passport received, no email that visa is issued?

Hey Vichel, thanks! Yeah, it should be no problem for them to change the location of your interview. Mine was not originally Montreal and I changed it without issue. Basically you register on the csc website, and choose the option to register only for courier service. You don't register...

Passport received, no email that visa is issued?

Sorry for the late update! I picked my passport up the next day with visa inside, and crossed at the montreal border without a hassle. I came through on the greyhound bus, it took about 30 minutes to process me, less time than some other people. I wasn't asked any questions about money or...

Passport received, no email that visa is issued?

Hey all, I've had a bit of a delay from my interview on the 7th, having to send in further documents that were not received till the 18th. I got the standard email about hearing back n 4 weeks since mail is sorted offsite. I just got an email from Loomis saying my passport will be...

    Canada immigration vs. US immigration

I getcha. I think Canada is nothing like the most famous cities/places in the US, ie New York, LA, New Orleans whatever....but is stunningly similar to the generic US. Cross from Seattle into Vancouver I didn't feel that I was in another country, at all.

    Canada immigration vs. US immigration

That is what I expected more or less, but it isn't what I found. Canada has almost nothing in common with Australia....nothing. and so very very much in common with the US. What similarities do you see between aus and canada?

    Canada immigration vs. US immigration

The talk of canadians not being proud of being canadian or there being poor job opportunities is all nonsense. As for US vs Canada? In a weird way I think the two countries have very little alike....I think the term 51st staters is soemwhat apt. Coming from Australia I thought Canada would be...

I made it! Happy to answer questions...

Thanks :) They said that if trying to cross the guards probably wouldn't like it...that's about it. No big deal was made of it and I was told to just mail in my new one. I think I was lucky perhaps in that my passport was valid, but not valid for travel to the US because it was an...

I made it! Happy to answer questions...

thankyou all :) I was missing a police check, my birth certificate and my education requirements. I was quite concerned about the education requirement as I didn't finish high school, but they only want proof of your highest degree, so I will forward them a letter about my masters and...

I made it! Happy to answer questions...

I had my interview this morning....I was very nervous as I had to turn up with a damaged passport an even some missing documents (the worst luck!). I arrived at the embassy in montreal at about 7:30am and there were already a lot of people waiting. I had to go and ring to get my courier...
