you SHOULD get an H1 extension without fail. It helps you stay in status in case your 140/485 is rejected

That might not be altogether true. My First EAD renewal followed that rule and so did the AP but for my second one they just gave the Date of Approval as the date from which it is valid, I ended up losing some time but still better because then you are not taking chances with INS krism
