Brief background:
I have been in US for over 5 years and I'm currently a PhD candidate.
In my situation:
1. I did 3 month internship with the company (off-campus) during the summer under CPT.
2. They offered me a contract after that, which requires me working as an independent contractor for several months to finish the project that I was working on during the internship.
3. The project is related to my field/research.
4. Can I use the contract to apply for the CPT? Essentially I'm not an employee to the company so they won't provide confirmation of employment to me, only the freelance contract.
