I was in the US since 2006 on a F1 visa and in 2010 close to the expiry of my OPT I applied for a change of status to F2 as a dependent on my wifes F1, the change of status was approved in March 2010 and a I539 issued.
In September 2010 I returned to my home country while my wife continued with her OPT in the US. Now in March 2011 I want to visit the US again, both to meet my wife and to attend a conference.
I have the following questions
1) Is there a transfer process from I539 to F2 visa on passport or is it as good as applying for a new F2 visa with all the associated fees and paperwork.
2) Since my visit is part business and part visit should I apply instead for B1/B2 or will such a application be denied? A B1/B2 would make the most sense for the long term since my wife returns to our Home country in September and the F2 would be of no use then.
