Returning to USA a tourist after J1

Hi

I am on a J1 scholar visa which expires in March. I would like to spend more time for tourism in america for 2 months (which I dont have time to do on my visa) so my question is, can I spend a week or so in Mexico/Canada to end my J1 and re-enter as a British tourist using the visa waiver programme? I am unsure if I can just go to mexico or if I need to return to my home country. I have never had any issues with US immigration.

any advice appreciated!!
 
Re-entering the USA after J1

Immediately after my Scholar program (I am a British scholar on a J1), can I exit the U.S. (to travel to Mexico or , for example) and re-enter in the tourist status or as a visa waiver visitor before returning to my home country?
