Return to USA after less than 2 years outside USA with a Re-Entry Permit

Background:
  • Parent has a Re-Entry Permit valid until January of next year (2018).
  • Parent left USA in Jan/2016 and plan to return sometime this year. Therefore, the total time outside of USA will be more than one year but less than two years.

Questions:
  • What type of questions can be asked at the airport ?
  • What documents we should carry (in addition to Passport and Re-Entry permit) ?
  • Should parent carry tax return for 2016 and prior years ?
  • Should parent carry employment verification letter of the original green card sponsor child who lives and works in the USA ?
  • Should parent carry the tax receipts of the original green card sponsor child who lives and works in the USA ?

  • Anyone having recent experience using Re-Entry Permit ?

I havent used a re-entry permit, but your questions can be easily answered by yourself. So - changing your list to numbered list.

  1. What type of questions can be asked at the airport ?
  2. What documents we should carry (in addition to Passport and Re-Entry permit) ?
  3. Should parent carry tax return for 2016 and prior years ?
  4. Should parent carry employment verification letter of the original green card sponsor child who lives and works in the USA ?
  5. Should parent carry the tax receipts of the original green card sponsor child who lives and works in the USA ?
1. It doesn't matter what other people have been asked. Your parents just need to be calm and truthful.
2. They should take whatever documents they think may be helpful. You mention the most important documents. They are only re-entering the country, it is not a whole interview process.
3. If they want, that might be wise.
4. Again, it is not an interview. The case has already been decided. However, if it makes them feel better to carry such documents, then why not.
5. See 4.
