Re-entry permit for my father who got Greencard last year...

My father got his GC approved (family based) in Aug of 2014. He had to go back to India in Oct 2014 and just returned back to USA (was outside US for just under 6 months) couple of days ago. He foresees a necessity for him to be in India for about 8 months later this year..

Since he has to stay outside US for a period of more than 6 months, my understanding is I should apply for his re-entry permit. Is there a requirement that he stays here in US for a couple of months before he can apply for re-entry permit or can he apply right away? Do they issue re-entry permit for an year or 2-year?

He should not need a re-entry permit for trips abroad up to 12 months - but he should be prepared to demonstrate that he is maintaining residence in the USA.
