Qs re "Living in marital union"

Hi,

I am a naturalized US citizen, my husband is a greencard holder (he did not apply for the greencard as a spouse of US citizen). We have been married since Jul 2000.

Due to extended family (who are outside the US) needing help, our kids (12y & 9y) and I have been living outside the US since Jun 2015 with my husband visiting every two months or so. He has completed 1.5yrs of residency in the US out of the last 3 yrs and we were hoping he could apply for naturalization now. He meets all the other requirements (we went through the flowchart). The point that we are not sure about is "living in marital union" because I am not at home in the US now.

Can he apply and be approved for naturalization if we explain the circumstances of the physical separation and how we are in a strong marriage (joint tax returns, same US address for bank accounts, credit cards etc)?

Thank you for your input.
