Maintain F1 status while in AOS?

Hi,
Applicant applied for AOS under F2B and already received I131 & i765 approval, I -485 still pending. he maintained F1 status up until Spring semester.

Does he need to maintain F1 status while in 485 is pending? (need to go back to school to in Fall? )

No, he does not need to maintain status as long as AOS is pending, if he's sure AOS won't be denied.
