i485 approved but need to travel before the card is received

Hi,

My mom yesterday received the welcome notice that she is now a permanent resident. It took exactly 8 months. The welcome notice mentioned that the card will arrive in 3 weeks. Her return flight is on Aug 11th and it seems to be highly unlikely that she will have the card in next 4 days.

1. Can she travel on 11th as planned and then I can send the physical card through my cousin in a month?
2. USCIS suggested that I can get temporary i-551. Is temporary i-551 stamp absolutely needed as she is not planning to return to US for at least another six months and by then she should have the physical card? Unfortunately I don't have an appointment available at the local field office before her travel on 11th :(

I appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks,
Moe

1. Technically, yes. But it will be a pain if it gets lost in the mail or something.
2. It's not absolutely needed, but it's preferable.

I have also applied AOS for my mom in April 2015. Did it take 8 months for her to get her interview for Greencard?
