How long should I wait after I break my residence?

I discontinued my U.S. residence and got confused about when to reapply for citizenship. Here is a brief: I left the country with my naturalization case pending and was away for couple of years. However, I had been sent an interview letter and I missed it. Even though USCIS told me to start an application afresh when I got back, I knew I would be denied, so I didn't bother filing it.

Now I am thinking about the best time to apply it. There is some confusion; I have read about 2 years and 1 day. I also read about 4 years and 1 day. Any help?

Thanks

If you are applying under the 3-year rule (married to US citizen for last 3 years), then you can apply 2 years + 1 day after you come back from that long trip. Otherwise (you are applying under the 5-year rule), you can apply 4 years + 1 day after you come back from that trip.
