Government old age benefits for new immigrant parent

Hi,

Below are three questions:
  • For a new Legal Permanent Resident immigrant parent over 65 years of age, are there any government benefits/assistance available ?
  • If any government assistance is available, will it impact citizenship application if any government assistance is accepted ?
  • What will be impact on the sponsors who signed affidavit of support when sponsoring old age parent ?

Thanks,

No benefits available to new immigrants, apart from unemployment insurance if they have worked in the US for whatever number of months is required to qualify for it, and disaster assistance such food and shelter after a hurricane/flood/earthquake.

To become eligible for other government benefits, new immigrants must wait 5 years or become a US citizen, unless they have previously worked and paid into the US Social Security system for 10 years.

However, new immigrant children can attend public schools at the high school level and below, without paying tuition.
