Getting cash reimbursements while on an F1 visa

Two Asian men I know are in the USA in an F1 VISA. They occasionally drive people to places and get cash reimbursements for gas and car wear & tear.

Are reimbursements okay to accept while on an F1 visa ? When does accepting cash become illegal or ill-advised ?

No. Violation of their visa terms because they are not allowed to work.

It is against the terms of their visa, and if they are caught (fortunately chances are low because we have some 11 million illegals doing that already) they could lose their visa status.

Actually not completely true. They can work for the school which they attend. This is not true ?

Yes, for a certain number of hours, but that is not what you were talking about in your original question. All non campus work is illegal and the folks you mention are doing that.
