I am currently doing the MS degree under J-1 status (subject to the 2 year rule), which will be expired in August (my sponsor is not the university, but an agency like Fullbright). I will continue to the PhD at the same institution.
My question is that if I transfer my J-1 visa sponsor to my University (for the PhD), every time I come back to my home country will be counted towards the 2 years? Or I must go out of the States and change status to F-1 in order to accumulate the 2 years when doing the PhD?
