Experiences to US by land

I know that it's still ok for Canadians to cross with driver's license and birth certificate; passports for land crossings will be mandatory beginning June 1, 2009. A mass mailing from the postal service went out to all Canadians to give them time to get passports. Right now, though, do the crossings at Vancouver and Niagara Falls type in everyone's name into a computer when the officers ask for your ID's? Which ones don't have booths; officers only standing and greeting you at car window? This is for an afternoon visit to go shopping across border into U.S. Is it a big deal if you're just going for the day? Thanks!
