Do you think receiving unemployment benefits is a shame?

Here someone working for my company as a consultant
had his contract terminated and can not find any job soon.
I told him to get unemployment benefits and he felt so
insulted, saying he would never go to claim it because
it is a symbol of loser.

Sorry. By contractor I mean he works for a consulting firm.
So far as clients are concerned, all consultants are called
contractors here even though they are employees of
some consulting forms.

I told him it is insurance but he said it means he could not get a job anyway so it still means he is a loser. I told him then why he got a car insurance instead of paying the liability out of his own pocket because having a car accident perhapss means you are
a stupid driver anyway. He said two things are not comparable.
He told him that loser or not, you are alreayd unemployed so
