Can passport expiration date affect TN renewal?

I was wondering if anyone had any experience or advise on this issue:

I'm about to extend my TN status for a 3rd time (thankful that this one will be for 3 years and not just 1). It will expire mid August 2009. I have a valid Canadian passport, but it expires in April 2010.

Because my passport is not valid for the entire 3 year period that I propose to stay, will that affect the approval of my application??? Or can I just renew my passport by mail after applying for the TN with no worries?
