Thanks for your reply. But this is social security tax not personal income tax. It is like I don't get social security benefit if I don't pay for it. Why is it a serious matter? Basically, my HR and accounting department screwed thing up 2 years ago, they were not taked out from my payroll. Why is my responsiblity to fix it now, not my employer? My understanding is that employer collects my portion and makes a match and pays it to IRS, I am not dealing with IRS directly regarding social security tax issue. Thanks again for your further suggestions. And if I pay now, how will I get back those social security credits? |

Social security tax is mandatory so that you can not
say "I don't need that benefits so that I do not pay". President Bush pays that too (correct me if I am wrong). You received two years paycheck and never realize your HR did not deduct SS taxes? It does not sound a plausible excuse if you do not notice 7.5% difference. You can say you do not know you need to pay SS taxes but that won't be a legal defense otherwise everyone would not pay taxes and then claim they do not know they have to. I am also surprised that SSA/IRS did never send you a letter. By law, you are supposed to receive a letter each year before your birth day from SSA explaining how much benefits you alreadu have earned. And IRS should notice that too by looking at your W2 and tax return. |
