questions on reentry permit
My wife and I both lost our jobs and we want to go to India for 2 years. Both of us have a green card.
1. Will applying for re-entry permit protect our green cards? 2. How long does it take to get a re-entry permit.? Can we apply, give a friend's address and leave for India? 3. Is there a chance that re-entery permit can be denied? Do we have to give a reson on the application? We will leave all our 401Ks, IRA accounts in America and put our stuff in storage. Please help !!!!!!!!!

The applicaton form allows you to elect to receive the re-entry permit overseas (e.g., Chennai consulate). The application is straight forward and one can fill it and leave the country. I have not heard of any cases of denial so far. The reasons have to be temporary in nature - short term assignment, completing some course/program, going to look after elderly parents who may be sick and require care etc. As **** said, you MUST file US tax returns each year.
