Gurus,
I am an Indian Citizen and got my GC a year back. I am married to a Canadian Citizen and would like to apply for my Canadian Citizenship. If I do so would it affect: - my US Green Card - later on if I wanted to apply for US Citizenship Would appreciate any comments/advice. Thanks In Advance! |

Don't you have to become a Landed Immigrant in Canada first before applying for citizenship? Brian |

Thanks Brian. Yes I think its part of the process.
I just want to know about the implications since I am not sure if there is any link between the GC and the GC holders nationality. Would appreciate any comments. TIA |

I think you are fine if you do not abandon your residency
in USA and INS does not consider getting Canadian citizenship as an indication of abandoning US residency. |

Since the original poster's spouse is a Canadian citizen, he/she should have no trouble maintaining his/her Canadian PR status. However, I am not sure whether this is adequate for becoming a Canadian citizen. |

Even a half-decent lawyer should have no trouble arguing that seekadvice had no intention of abandoning his US PR status.

While I agree in principle about your comment on lawyers, if I were in seekadvice's shoes, I doubt whether I would consult a lawyer a priori.

Thank you all for helping out, it was a great help.
I checked with a lawyer and was advice as follows "probably would not affect your green card and future U.S. citizenship application as long as you maintained your residence in the U.S. It is possible to abandon your U.S. residence by not living in the U.S. or by not paying U.S. taxes." Thanks again! |
