you have a choice

you have the choice of maintaining your H1B and having your new employer file for new H1B status and continue to be subject to those rules & limitations. Or you may use your employment authorization document as a "pending permanent resident applicant" to become employed. You must submit form I-765 prior to expiration of present one for additional time. The only problems arise when family relationship (marriage breaks apart, death of I-130 petitioner, etc.) prior to I-485 decision. then if you have fallen out of H1B status, you might have to return home.
